Let me show you how to ruin something that was supposed to be funny.

I cannot even articulate how happy I am someone incorporated the look on Loki’s face when Thor hugs Frigga into this GIF set. Because nobody ever talks about the Loki-Frigga relationship and they need to because it’s awesome.

Once upon a time there was a woman, who represented some organization of adoptive parents, who was trying to raise a little internet stink about this line/this character relationship with Marvel. Because how dare Thor treat Loki as less-legitimate! That’s offensive!

… I wanted to go off on her, but I didn’t because the way adoptive parents rule the discourse on adoption (and the way negative or critical opinions on adoptions are seen as taboo, because if adoption gets presented as problematic and adopted children as ungrateful they will discourage all those savior-parents from saving poor babies!) makes it hard to begin to figure out how to express myself. I stayed quiet.

But a closed adoption, a secret adoption, you get othered anyway. You get treated differently in ways that are nearly impossible to articulate. (I was white, they were white. They assumed I wouldn’t notice we didn’t look alike and I didn’t) Everyone around you, even if they love you, is keeping something from you. Even if they don’t hang you out to dry like that, they can, they always have that option, and people will side with them. You’re not what they expected? You just came from bad genes. I’m so glad they showed this.

This fucking story, this not even very good comic book movie, this tale of norse assholes, was and still is the only depiction of a person who is pissed off by that one, central, that well meaning lie. Give me another adoption narrative where the kid gets to feel betrayed, gets to have complex ties of love and loyalty to the people that betrayed him, and play out all those feelings. It does not exist.
